A United States Permanent Resident Card also known as a “Green Card”, serves as proof of a person’s lawful permanent resident status. Green Card is a “privilege” and not a “right”. You may lose it anytime under certain circumstances. Privileges for Green Card Holders in the U.S. - right to live permanently - right to work - right to travel abroad for a certain period of time - the opportunity to apply for U.S. citizenship after a certain amount of years as a Green Card holder - right to petition for a Green Card for the applicant’s spouse and any unmarried children under 21 years of age How Do I Get a Green Card? The only way to obtain a permanent resident status (hold a green card) through the following process: - through a family member - through employment - through investment - through marriage - through adoption - through “ the Registry” provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act - through the “Diversity Lottery” , also called “Green Card Lottery” How to apply for a Green Card? When applying for a Green Card , you’re applying for proof as an individual lawful. It is issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and give you the right to live and work permanently, leave the country for business or vacation. Green Card is not the same as U.S. citizenship, but it is a critical step on the path to citizenship. There are several ways to apply, so it’s vey important to understand all of your options before you apply. Usually, an immigrant has to go through three-step process for their application. First step, USCIS will approve the immigrant petition submitted by the qualifying relative or an employer. Second step, if the applicant is an “immediate relative”, immigrant visa number must be available. For certain types of green card applications, the number of green cards that is available is only limited. Even if the USCIS approves the petition, visa number might not be immediately available and immigrants will be placed on a waiting list. (exception is for immigrants who are “immediate relative”, no need for them on the waiting list and may proceed to the next step immediately).Third step, if immigrant visa number is available, applicant must apply with the USCIS to adjust their current status to permanent resident status or to their nearest U.S. consulate for an immigrant visa to be able to come in the United States. |
